Coffee is much-loved all over the world for its rich flavor, distinct aroma, and of course, the energy it conveys through caffeine content. Many people can’t get their day started without that first cup of coffee in the morning. Despite the overwhelming love for coffee all around the world, sometimes it gets a bad rap. What you may not know is the incredible amount of health benefits that drinking coffee has. Let’s take a look at the five benefits of drinking coffee every morning.

1. Reduced Disease Risk

Whether you drink kona coffee, Sumatra coffee, or Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee, all coffee offers potential disease-protection through antioxidants called polyphenols and hydroxycinnamic acids. These antioxidants fight free radicals, which are the culprits behind inflammation and many diseases. Drinking a cup of coffee every morning can help you avoid Alzheimer’s, type 2 diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, and cancer. The highest risk reduction comes with Alzheimer’s. If you drink coffee every morning, you have up to a 65% chance of avoiding this neurodegenerative disease.

2. More Energy and Focus

Many people can’t help waking up in the morning with a certain amount of groggy and tired feelings. Sometimes that’s due to other factors, but some people just have a hard time waking up in the morning. Coffee can give you the boost you need with a dose of caffeine. As soon as it gets to the bloodstream in your brain, it blocks an inhibitory neurotransmitter called adenosine. This immediately reduces your feelings of being groggy or tired. Caffeine also adds an increased sense of awareness, energy, reaction and memory. It can also boost your mood if you’re feeling down.

3. Feel Better

Feeling better might sound generic, but coffee does indeed reduce your risk of depression, and it also helps reduce pain. The end result is that you generally feel better. According to a Harvard study, if you drink four or more cups of coffee per day, you’re 53% less likely to deal with depression so severe that you entertain thoughts of suicide. Among women who drink that same amount, they have a 20% reduced risk of any kind of depression. What about pain? Science says that caffeine is effective at blocking pain signals in the brain. According to a Norwegian study of office workers, the ones who drank coffee gave a stated pain level of 41. Their co-workers who didn’t drink coffee gave a pain level of 55.

4. Boost of Nutrition

A standard cup of black coffee without any additives has about two calories. You might not expect something with such a low calorie hit to have any nutrients, but coffee has plenty. Besides the previously mentioned antioxidants, coffee contains potassium, magnesium, manganese, niacin and riboflavin. You can still get all these nutrients if you add cream or sugar to your coffee, but you’ll take a bigger calorie hit. If you must add anything to your coffee, it’s best to consider milk or cream as that will give you the benefits of dairy.

5. Burn Fat

There’s a reason why caffeine is a common ingredient in weight-loss supplements. There aren’t many natural substances that aid in burning fat, but caffeine is one of them. However, you can get a boost of fat-burning power just by drinking your regular cup of coffee every morning. If you’re already overweight, then the coffee will help you burn as much as 10% more fat. If you’re lean, then you can burn up to 29% fat.

Drinking coffee every morning can help you wake up and feel better. It can also set the tone for the rest of your day with more energy, focus and fat-burning potential.
